Hello Ward pihêsiwin Residents,
I would like to provide a further update regarding the ongoing construction along 170 Street.
As my office receives information, I will be continuing to share regular updates with you on this work.
170 Street / Terwillegar Drive at Anthony Henday
Work is progressing on the new northbound Terwillegar Drive bridge over Anthony Henday Drive, including earthworks for the bridge and future loop ramps.
170 Street at Windermere Boulevard
Construction also continues at the Terwillegar Drive and Windermere Boulevard intersection.
- The current southbound traffic configuration remains in place.
- Temporary lane realignments have been implemented to maintain dedicated turning lanes for all southbound movements through the intersection while construction proceeds.
- Beginning in mid-June, work on northbound Terwillegar Drive at Windermere Boulevard will commence.
Residents can expect:
- Delays and congestion, particularly for westbound Windermere Boulevard traffic turning northbound onto Terwillegar Drive.
- Temporary changes to turning movements through the intersection.
To help minimize congestion, the Windermere Boulevard intersection reconstruction has been divided into multiple stages and is being accelerated where possible. For more information on this work, please follow this link.
Looking Ahead
Construction of the new shared path and pedestrian bridge connecting Windermere and Haddow will also begin this summer. The new northbound Terwillegar Drive bridge and pedestrian bridge are anticipated to open in fall 2027. Once complete, the existing Terwillegar Drive bridge over Anthony Henday Drive will be converted to carry southbound traffic only.
170 Street at 28 Ave SW - 38 Ave SW
The scope of work involves reconstruction of the existing roadway to an urban arterial standard, addressing the current state of pavement, drainage, and street lighting, in addition to installing underground utility infrastructure required to bridge a connection between neighbouring developments.
To accomplish the upgrade, a temporary detour has been installed and is currently operating, shifting traffic around the portion of road being reconstructed, this will be required for the duration of construction until the new road is complete and ready for public transportation to utilize.
Current timelines are below, which are weather dependent and subject to change, however we will provide you routine updates throughout the project:
- The detour road is operational, with daily monitoring and maintenance ensuring safe traffic operations
- Although the detour road enables the majority of road upgrade to take place, there is a full road closure from June 15th to July 20th, required to facilitate the construction of all underground utility infrastructure connecting Glenridding Ravines and Kendal
- Digital messaging boards are in place to facilitate detours
-
Following the above road closure and re-opening of the detour, construction activities to be completed prior to full opening of the new road include:
- Jul – Aug: grading and further underground utility installations
- Sept – Oct: concrete, paving, and line painting
- Nov – Dec: street lighting and signage
- Jan – Feb: EPCOR energization and detour removal
Current anticipated opening to the public is February 2027, with shared use paths and further landscape completion in 2027.
The City of Edmonton has (COE) worked with all developers completing arterial road upgrade projects and summarized them on the COE website here
